L-PRF grafting and Osstell IDX
At our practice, we take pride in using the best technology and techniques to optimize our treatment plans. We customize your care by utilizing L-PRF grafting and Osstell IDX for a variety of procedures, such as dental implants and sinus ridge augmentations.
About L-PRF grafting
Grafting material can fill in an area where bone or tissue is absent, help provide structural stability and assist in the healing process. Leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is an advanced grafting technique, in which we use your blood to create personalized grafting material.
How is L-PRF grafting material created?
We first take a small blood sample from you and then spin your blood in a centrifuge to separate its contents in order to construct a matrix or blood clot. Next, we place the matrix in a machine designed to compress the matrix into the desired thickness. If applicable, we then dip the L-PRF matrix into a mixture of bone grafting material to add healing elements for bone regeneration.
The Benefits of L-PRF Grafting:
- Accelerates the body’s natural healing process
- Contains zero additives
- Reduces the risk of allergy and side effects
- Produces excellent bone or tissue quality
What Each Component of L-PRF Does:
- Leukocytes (white blood cells) assist in healing our bodies by destroying pathogens and cleaning up dead cells.
- Platelets (cell fragments in our blood) help the body form blood clots and produce growth factors.
- Fibrin (a type of protein in our blood) aids platelets in creating blood clots.
Each of these components works together to quickly create a scaffold—a framework for new tissue to grow on—that forms an efficient network for cell communication. Due to the high concentration of platelets and leukocytes, the fibrin releases growth factors for up to 14 days. In sum, rapid scaffolding and a constant release of growth factors expedites the healing process.
What treatments use L-PRF?
L-PRF is used for dental and oral maxillofacial surgical procedures, including:
- Dental implants
- Bone defects
- Extraction sockets
- Sinus and dental ridge augmentation
- Palatal defects
- Maxillary bone atrophy
About Osstell IDX
As medical professionals, it is our duty to help our patients make the best decisions possible for their health, and Osstell IDX provides accurate, consistent and objective data to do just that. We utilize this specialized machine to help us determine when it is safe to place the permanent abutment and crown, during the dental implant placement process.
What does Osstell IDX measure?
Osstell IDX indirectly measures the degree of osseointegration (or how much the jawbone has fused with the titanium implant) by directly measuring the stability of the implant.
How does Osstell IDX work?
This machine has three parts: the SmartPeg, probe and IDX instrument. The SmartPeg attaches to a patient’s implant, and the probe has a magnet, which emits magnetic pulses. The magnetic pulses cause the SmartPeg to vibrate, and the IDX instrument measures the frequency of these vibrations, which are represented by a value called ISQ.
What does my ISQ value mean?
If your jawbone is dense (or healed), the peg vibrates at a higher frequency. So, if the implant is stable, you will have a high ISQ value. If the ISQ value is low, that means the bone is not dense or is not done healing, and the implant is not stable.
