Dental Implants FAQs

Dental Implants: Changing Lives

Dental implants have revolutionized the way we treat missing teeth. Anchoring artificial teeth in the jaw makes them as strong as your natural teeth, which allows you to eat anything you want without worrying about your teeth slipping when you talk, eat, and laugh. Dental implants allow you to live your life to the fullest!

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth that is made up of three parts. The implant itself is a small titanium screw that is placed in your jaw. An abutment, or connector, holds the implant to the crown, the third and visible part of the dental implant.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implants are made of titanium, so they are able to permanently bond with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This fusion is so effective that it allows dental implants to function as natural teeth in all chewing, biting, and dietary capacities.

How long does it take to get a dental implant?

The entire process of getting a dental implant with us usually takes 4-6 months, with an additional 4 months if your case requires bone grafting.

What are the advantages of getting dental implants at Jeffrey S. Burns DDS?

Our state-of-the-art technology places us in a league of our own. An in-house CEREC machine allows us to scan the implant on the day of your surgery, fabricate the implant crown in our office, and place it in your mouth once the implant has been created. In other words, we are able to complete every part of the treatment in only 2 appointments: surgery and placement.

Dr. Burn’s meticulous attention to detail paired with our cutting-edge technology makes the procedure very safe and efficient. Dr. Burns begins by taking a 3-D scan of the implant site before designing the perfect location and size of the implant. He then creates and prints a guide, using our 3-D printer.

Will I need to have bone grafting?

On average, patients that have had a missing tooth for a month or more will require bone grafting prior to dental implant surgery. A consultation with one of our doctors will reveal the particulars of your specific case. We understand each patient is unique. So we tailor treatments accordingly.

Will I miss work?

Plan to take the rest of the day off following you implant procedure. Most patients are able to return to work the next day with very little discomfort.

Do dental implants hurt?

No, dental implant surgery is performed under you choice of a variety of anesthesia options, and the surgical site is always kept numb during the procedure. Later in the day, as the anesthesia wears off, you may start to have some mild discomfort but nothing that can’t be controlled with over-the-counter medications.
